In these lived the culture of consumption heyday period, most of the everyday objects we use the disposable version now. Throw-away. It is impossible to resist the temptations. They are cheap, simple and expendable. There are even disposable versions of so many categorical objects that we can say that they constitute their own culture. We have created a kind of throw-away, single use society. If we give an example, we have encountered most recently that a cup of coffee is the symbol of the city of New York! The sleepless nights and following our tired days it, the disposable cups of our coffees we hugged with lifeblood…
In school, at work, at markets, and many other places, we find these cardboard cups in many colors, sizes and shapes. One of the biggest and most important suppliers of these disposable coffee cups is coffee shops. Come to the disposable coffee cups that we have never thought of second time in our daily life, let's look from the beginning!
In fact, the first appearance of these objects was slightly different from their current use. If you want to go to the beginning of coffee drinking, you will have to go to the beginning of drinking water. And the history of disposable coffee cups is actually starting with disposable water cups. Paper cups, neither made for drinking water, nor thought to be a temporary product that children would not break. In the early 1900s, they were designed for a campaign against epidemic illness. They have begun to use the object produced as healthy cups to escape from the epidemic illnesses. These cardboard cups which are used to increase the consumption of caffeine over time are now indispensable parts in our lives. They even have a coffee cup in Starbucks cardboard cup design so this object became so iconic. But of course, recent days, those who bring them to such an important position are undoubtedly the coffee in them.
Consumption of coffee and coffee have a very important place in whole world. I think, one of the most important reasons for this is heavy and long working conditions in our lives. Because the caffeine inside the coffee pokes you and allows you to be more effective during the day. It's hard to think about what we would do without coffee. The most consumed coffee per person is the northern European countries that coffee consumption will look around the world. If you think that the northern European countries are among the happiest countries in world, drinking coffee should be related with happiness. But contrary to this, the fact that countries where coffee plants are grown have the least coffee drinking rate in the world is a sign of capitalism's wildness.
There are many coffee companies in Istanbul. And if you do not have time to sit and have a cup of coffee in a cup, they will serve you in cardboard cups of coffee. But to avoid depriving you from cup of coffee pleasure, every brand has its own cup of cardboard coffee. This point is very important because people go out with this coffee cup, go to the office, so they carry them with them. Like a jacket we wear, like a shoe, we keep it on hand and we do not want to keep something unpleasant. At this point, disposable coffee cups start to be branded independently from which store they are. They are starting to dress, decorate and make cardboard cups attractive. They are starting to write your name on the cardboard in order to make your cardboard coffee cup feel a bit more of your own. And it makes important in our lives to make an ordinary object special for ourselves that can be possess and give up so quickly.
If they take Starbucks as an example of these coffee shops, they have a very important place for Turkey(!) There are so many branches, for example, we can mention three branches in Taksim. Many people have been proven their existence through this brand, which has become a social status meter. What makes a coffee attractive to take away without a coffee flavor? Package. So, as a company policy, coffee cups are more specialized in some periods like a season or a term. A disposable coffee cup with only a Starbucks logo on it, in my opinion a disposable coffee cup adorned with Christmas themes is more attractive to everyone. But on the contrary, as a company policy, there is an implementation Starbucks has to emphasize on the environment importance for us. You pay less if you fill it with a thermos, instead of taking a cup of coffee or a cup of drinking. You are still alive with the peacefulness of being useful to the environment(!) I do not think they have adopted such an implementation and have adopted it to their customers.
From the consumption objects to the art…
Millions of consumed coffee cups every day in the world made from cartoon, they are actually an industrial product. A product from the mass production band. There is little difference to try to distinguish one from the other. Maybe something happened to it during the distribution. One can say this industry is one of the most aggressive areas of capitalism and finds itself as part of an artwork. Yes today, art is sprouting everywhere from everywhere and it also lives on these disposable cardboard cups. For such an example, I think these are a rebellion to capitalism and our standardized lives. Maybe a rebellion to the movement of making everyone and everything a part of the system…
How is it used without coffee?
As a result of the fact that the disposable coffee cup is very functional and easily accessible, it is intended for use out of its intended use. As far as my experience is concerned, I have done a cement moulding with a cardboard cup. I saw used it as a tool to draw circles, as a water paint container or as an ashtray. It even happened to be a component of lighting design structure. The lack of a remarkable feature makes it possible to adapt it everywhere. So it does not matter to us very much, but we have become what we do in its absence. Disposable coffee cups are quite useful although not used at all. After using a coffee cup, it can change its identity and go on its life. This object which capitalist culture uses only once to consume, may have a permanent place instead of once passing through our lives…
